Despite a good amount of savings and a help to buy ISA, I was a bit apprehensive about going to a high street lender as my income as a professional athlete differs from a normal salary. Essentially we’re funded by UK Sport and the government, so my income is known as a stipend. 

Putting this aside we were actually given an agreement in principle without a broker, found our perfect home and things were moving along nicely.

Two to three months had passed and our lender all of a sudden became quite twitchy, asking more questions about my income. Ultimately the lender wouldn’t finalise the mortgage offer leaving both my partner and I very frustrated.  Hope of landing our dream home was fading because in our minds all lenders were now going to see us as a risk.
