A career built for specialist mortgage success

Having previously worked as a graduate at the data goliath Experian, Pete started in mortgages at arguably the worst possible time, the credit crunch of 2008/9. It was a time that he describes as fertile ground to cut his teeth, with tight lending criteria and high unemployment that made whole of market of mortgage advice an incredibly difficult landscape. Despite this, Pete rose to become the most successful in the company (UK wide) within 9 months of becoming FCA regulated, and within 12 months was managing the branch, and recruiting and training new staff, many of whom were decades his senior.

A passion for journalism and respected author

Throughout his career, Pete has had a passion for writing (having written a 6-month travel blog as well as documenting his team’s successful charity climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro) and is the drive behind most of the words you read on the OMA website, marketing information, and training material. He has written articles for trade and National press and is seen across the industry as an expert in mortgages.

…and many more! Pete now runs a team of financial journalists, whom have the pleasure of reaching out to new customers, and currently writes a regular column for mortgage solutions and is the mortgage expert for LOVEMoney.

Corporate Experience

Pete later joined one of the biggest branches at Lloyds, taking upon himself to step out and launch a campaign to refinance customers and staff across the midlands and, within 12 months, was one of the top 10 advisors in the UK. During this time he founded an initiative that was rolled out across the group to ensure borrowers got the best financial and protection advice, inviting wealth managers to join his customer appointments, resulting in an unprecedented uplift in protected customers, which earned him some real kudos throughout the group, as well as many happy customers.

Pete Mugleston, FCA Regulated Mortgage Expert from Online Mortgage Advisor

Online Mortgage Advisor (OMA) was born

With a hunger for helping the people who needed it most, Pete founded Online Mortgage Advisor (OMA) (with his friend, and our Marketing Director, Dave) and re-joined the whole of market mortgage broker world in a small brokerage, from where his love of training new specialist advisors began. Setting company records month on month, whilst also training and supporting the growing team, Pete helped the firm transition from a 6 man single room office to a 30+ advisor strong hub of experts, and one of the most successful specialist firms in the midlands.

Building a successful brokerage

To further develop processes and help more OMA customers get the right advice, Pete left to co-found Create Finance, alongside focusing on the growth of OMA, with the view of recruiting and training the UK’s best specialist advisors. Within 3 years, Create Finance have grown from a team of 3 to 50+, with an in-house training academy allowing new advisors and trainee apprentices to join the industry, as well as helping experienced advisors understand specialist markets.

An appetite for Technology

Pete designed, planned, and project managed the implementation of OMAs heralded Salesforce automated broker platform, harnessing technology with an understanding of broker and customer needs that few others share. The platform has catalysed the growth of OMA from 2 firms and a handful of advisors, to over 25 firms and 150 advisors around the UK, now helping 150 new customers get the right advice on a daily basis, and sights set on increasing this to over 1,000 by 2020. Pete also headed up the UK’s first API integration with a mortgage lender, allowing customers to opt in for pre-approval direct from a lender.

Pioneering learning & development

He has also created, designed, and published OMAs LIBF Accredited development program, the OMA Academy, which is the UK’s only online specialist mortgage broker training platform. It is the academy that forms the backbone for recruitment and training of the specialist advisors, where brokers can only access OMA’s customers once they have earned the right, having completed the demanding 25 module course and obtaining the appropriate license to do so The OMA Academy not only shows brokers an insight they’d get nowhere else, but for many, it opens the door to a career in specialist mortgages.

Charity & Clarity

When Pete is not helping customers get the right advice about mortgages, he freely gives his time and support to a charity that is very dear to his heart, Georgie’s Gift. Georgie’s Gift Ltd was set up in memory of Georgie Hall, who was only 23 months when she fell ill in February 2015. Days later she passed away after being diagnosed with Meningitis and Septicaemia. Pete also supports  World Clarity Foundation, who have the vision of eradicating chronic psychological suffering globally, by 2030, and arranges keynote speakers and experts in the three principles to speak to staff and their friends and family.
